Description: Fort George, also known as Fort Majabigwaduce, Castine, or Penobscot, was constructed in 1779 by Great Britain during the American Revolutionary War in the town of Castine, situated in Maine. Positioned atop a strategic location on the Bagaduce Peninsula, this fort was erected as a component of the British plan to establish a new colony known as New Ireland. It played a central role in the British defensive strategy during the ill-fated Penobscot Expedition organized by Massachusetts in an attempt to recapture Castine in July and August of 1779 in response to the British occupation. During the War of 1812, the British once again took control of Castine from September 1814 to April 1815. During this period, they reconstructed Fort George and established smaller forts in its vicinity, reviving the concept of the New Ireland colony. Today, the remnants of the fort, primarily consisting of its earthworks, are part of a park owned by the state and maintained by the town.
