Description: Portland Head Light is a historic lighthouse located in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, near Portland. It is one of the most iconic and well-known lighthouses in the United States. Situated on the rocky cliffs of Fort Williams Park, the lighthouse overlooks the entrance to Portland Harbor and the Casco Bay. Portland Head Light was first commissioned by George Washington in 1787 and was completed in 1791. The lighthouse tower stands at a height of 80 feet (24 meters) and is made of rubblestone and brick. The original light source was a whale oil lamp, and it was later replaced with a Fresnel lens. Today, the lighthouse is automated and continues to serve as an active aid to navigation. The scenic beauty and historical significance of Portland Head Light make it a popular attraction for visitors. The lighthouse offers stunning views of the rugged Maine coastline and the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. The surrounding Fort Williams Park provides ample space for picnicking, walking trails, and exploring historic military remnants, such as Battery Keyes and Goddard Mansion. Inside the former keeper's house, located adjacent to the lighthouse, is the Portland Head Light Museum. The museum exhibits historical artifacts, photographs, and displays that showcase the history and maritime heritage of the lighthouse and its surroundings.
