Description: The B. Everett Jordan Dam, also known as Jordan Lake Dam, is a concrete gravity dam located on the Haw River in central North Carolina, United States. The dam forms Jordan Lake, a large reservoir that provides water supply, flood control, and recreational opportunities for the region. The B. Everett Jordan Dam was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and completed in 1983. It stands at approximately 115 feet (35 meters) tall and spans a length of about 3,800 feet (1,158 meters). The dam's primary purpose is flood control, helping to regulate the flow of the Haw River and prevent downstream flooding during periods of heavy rainfall. The reservoir created by the dam, Jordan Lake, covers an area of approximately 13,940 acres (5,640 hectares) and has a storage capacity of over 300 billion gallons of water. The lake serves as a major water supply source for several nearby municipalities, including Raleigh, Durham, and Cary. In addition to its water management functions, Jordan Lake is a popular recreational destination. The lake's extensive shoreline offers opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming, and camping. Visitors can enjoy water sports, such as kayaking and canoeing, as well as fishing for a variety of species, including bass, catfish, and crappie. The surrounding Jordan Lake State Recreation Area provides various amenities for visitors, including campgrounds, hiking trails, picnic areas, and nature preserves. The recreation area is managed by the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation and offers opportunities for outdoor activities and nature appreciation.
