Description: The incident in 1983, where a truck carrying an overheight load caused damage to the bridge, led to its abandonment. Subsequently, the Florida Department of Transportation decided to replace the old bridge, and a new one was opened in 1986. After the replacement, the old bridge was deeded to the Florida Department of Natural Resources. Today, the Hillman Bridge still stands, and it has been preserved as a historical structure. It is located near the former Suwanee River Store and is accessible only to foot and bike traffic. Its survival has made it one of the best surviving examples of a Pratt metal-truss bridge in the state of Florida. Preserving historical bridges like the Hillman Bridge not only helps retain a piece of local history but also adds to the cultural and architectural heritage of the region. These bridges can become unique landmarks and points of interest for visitors interested in exploring the historical aspects of an area.
