Description: The Adair County's original Freedom Rock® undergoes a fresh coat of paint every May, just in time for Memorial Day, all thanks to the artistic prowess of Ray "Bubba" Sorensen. The captivating journey of the Freedom Rock® began in May 1999 when a solitary boulder on Highway 25 near Menlo, Iowa, was transformed into a profound tribute. On its surface, the rock was adorned with the powerful phrase "Thank You Veterans For Our Freedom," accompanied by the resplendent imagery of the American Flag and a striking representation of the flag-raising at Iwo Jima. Since its inception in Adair County, the Freedom Rock® has grown to become an iconic symbol of gratitude and respect for veterans across Iowa and beyond. Each year, its fresh appearance serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have defended our freedom, and it stands as a source of inspiration for countless individuals, fostering a deep sense of patriotism and appreciation for our nation's heroes.
