Description: The Sioux County Freedom Rock holds a special distinction as the first one artist Ray "Bubba" Sorensen painted in Northwestern Iowa. Situated in Veterans Memorial Park in Hawarden, this remarkable rock serves as a poignant tribute to the courage and sacrifice of our veterans. The largest painting on the Hawarden rock depicts armed troops courageously coming ashore by boat, helicopters, and parachutes, capturing the essence of their valor in the face of adversity. On another side of the rock, an emotionally charged image portrays a prisoner of war behind bars, gripping a ribbon with the poignant words "Not forgotten" written on it. This powerful artwork serves as a moving reminder of the unwavering commitment to bring our missing heroes home. Completing the ensemble is the image of the American Legion seal, skillfully designed to appear as if it were seamlessly set within the very heart of the rock. This symbol of strength and unity stands as a testament to the legacy of the American Legion in supporting veterans and their families. Together, these stirring depictions etched onto the Sioux County Freedom Rock inspire a profound sense of gratitude, ensuring that the sacrifices and bravery of our veterans are forever remembered and celebrated in Hawarden.
