Description: The Rock's east side stands as a heartfelt dedication to Dixie Cornell Gebhardt, the talented creator of the Iowa Flag. On the west side, a tribute unfolds for William Milo Stone, Marion County's esteemed 6th Governor. Stone, a close friend of Abraham Lincoln, was a witness to the tragic event of Lincoln's assassination, helping carry the wounded President to the nearby boarding house where he later succumbed to his injuries. The painting captures the building that once occupied the current site of the Civil War Memorial, which served as the Capitol during Stone's time as Governor. Sadly, this historic structure fell victim to a fire some years after his tenure. A symbol of pride and unity, the north side of the Rock features the revered "old Glory." On the south side, a powerful portrayal reveals a view from a Helicopter door, reminiscent of the brave efforts in retrieving wounded soldiers. Notably, Clifford DeMoss, a Vietnam Veteran from Knoxville, holds a significant place on this side, as his ashes were incorporated into the rock's painting as a lasting tribute to his memory. Located in Young Park, just south of the racetrack in Knoxville, IA, the Marion County Freedom Rock serves as a poignant testament to the county's distinguished figures, history, and enduring commitment to honoring veterans and their sacrifices.
