Description: In Lewis City Park, you'll find a magnificent 15,000-pound, eight-foot tall, and nearly 5-foot wide boulder, meticulously painted by the talented Greenfield artist, Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II. Situated on a concrete pad at the park's northeast corner, this boulder is the esteemed Cass County Freedom Rock. The artwork on the Cass County Freedom Rock showcases images that hold special significance to the county's rich history. One such depiction honors Major Belle Macomber Reynolds, who accompanied her husband during the Civil War, tending to wounded and dying soldiers. Later in her life, she pursued a medical career, working with the Red Cross and becoming the first professionally trained teacher in Cass County. Another image featured on the rock pays homage to the 23rd Regiment, Iowa Volunteers, Company I, which predominantly comprised men from Cass County during the Civil War. Lastly, the artwork portrays the iconic Hitchcock House, a significant station on the Underground Railroad, proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places and recognized as a National Landmark. The Cass County Freedom Rock stands as a poignant tribute to the county's historical figures and events, serving as a cherished symbol of gratitude and remembrance for the community's past and the sacrifices made by those who came before us.
