Description: The Rock stands as a lasting memorial, paying tribute to all the brave veterans of Mahaska County, past, present, and future. Its profound significance is evident in the thoughtful depictions on each side. On the south side, seven esteemed generals' faces grace the rock, commemorating their remarkable contributions to our nation's military history. Turning to the north side, the focus shifts to the First Cav's vital role in liberating POWs from Manila, an extraordinary display of valor and compassion. Moving to the east side, "The Bugler" takes center stage, immortalizing the memory of Harry L. Anderson, the courageous figure after whom the American Legion in Oskaloosa is named. Anderson fell victim to a German sniper's bullet in March 1918 while bravely delivering vital orders and mail on the front lines during WWI. The west side features the tribute "WAC," a nod to Oskaloosa's own Theresa "Billie" Davis, the first member of the WAAC or Women's Army Auxiliary Corps/The Women's Army Corps. Created in 1942, this corps played a crucial role in supporting the Army and was officially disbanded in 1978. This poignant monument can be found on the east end of town, standing proudly by the Mahaska Vet Clinic. The Mahaska County Freedom Rock is a solemn reminder of the valor and sacrifices of our veterans, embodying the deep gratitude and respect of the community for their service.
