Description: Sanborn proudly hosts a grandiose memorial paying tribute to the multitude of military veterans from O'Brien County. As part of Sorensen's Freedom Rock Tour, an inspiring mural graces each of Iowa's 99 counties, and Sanborn's mural is designated as the 52nd in the series. The first painting commemorates the valiant service of Daniel Pippinger, a Civil War veteran from Sanborn who passed away in 1937 at the remarkable age of 97. Having joined the Union Army at just 21 years old, Pippinger eventually attained the esteemed rank of first lieutenant. The mural also acknowledges Sanborn's rich railroad heritage, featuring a poignant scene with a soldier and a woman bidding farewell at the train depot before his departure for war. Additionally, the memorial solemnly honors the victims of the tragic 9/11 terrorist attacks, with poignant depictions of the Twin Towers, Pentagon, United Flight 93, and a U.S. soldier. Located just north of the pool on Main St. in Sanborn, IA, this exceptional artwork stands as a tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of O'Brien County's veterans. The Sanborn Freedom Rock serves as a timeless reminder of the courage displayed by those who have served and defended our nation, leaving an indelible mark on the heart of the community.
