Description: Situated proudly at the intersection of Main and 8th Streets, the Cerro Gordo County Freedom Rock stands as a resolute symbol of tribute and valor. Completed in the autumn of 2018, this 16-ton monument honors the exceptional bravery of Captain Henry Irving Smith, the sole soldier from Cerro Gordo County to be bestowed with the prestigious Congressional Medal of Honor. A distinguished Civil War hero, Captain Smith was awarded this highest honor in 1865, a testament to his extraordinary courage and selflessness. Crafted by the talented Iowa native artist, Ray Michael Sorensen II, affectionately known as "Bubba," the Freedom Rock's vibrant artwork tells the story of Captain Smith's heroic journey and serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served their country. This remarkable masterpiece is part of an inspiring initiative, with over 70 rocks planned across Iowa's 99 counties, each telling a unique story and honoring the brave men and women who have served their communities and nation. The Cerro Gordo County Freedom Rock stands tall as a cherished and everlasting symbol of respect and remembrance for Captain Smith and all the valiant souls who have dedicated their lives to defend our freedom.
