Description: Dixville Notch is defined by a brief, steep-walled ravine that serves as a natural divide between Dixville Peak and Cave Mountain. Additionally, it marks the geographic boundary between the Connecticut River and Androscoggin River drainage areas. Its natural splendor had been acknowledged as far back as 1866 when George Parsons, an innkeeper, founded the Dix House, a welcoming guesthouse situated on the western side of the notch, alongside the picturesque Lake Gloriette. Approximately thirty years later, the property was acquired by Henry Hale, who went on to construct The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel on this very site.
