Description: USS Hawkbill (SSN-666) was a Sturgeon-class attack submarine and the second vessel in the United States Navy to bear the name of the hawksbill, a sizable sea turtle. This naming decision continued the tradition established due to the unintentional misspelling of "hawksbill" when naming the initial ship of the same name, USS Hawkbill (SS-366), a Balao-class submarine launched in 1944. USS Hawkbill (SSN-666) was the eighteenth submarine in a series of 39 Sturgeon-class nuclear-powered submarines constructed by the Navy.
