Description: This is on a private property - The Forks of Cypress was a historic plantation located near Florence, Alabama, notable for its grand Greek Revival mansion, which was built in the 1830s by James Jackson, an Irish immigrant and prominent planter. The mansion was distinguished by its unique architectural feature of a colonnade of 24 Ionic columns that encircled the house, making it one of the most iconic antebellum homes in the South. The plantation played a significant role in the region's agricultural economy, primarily through cotton production, and was also a site of significant social and cultural activity. Unfortunately, the mansion was destroyed by fire in 1966, leaving only the columns standing as a haunting reminder of its former grandeur. Today, the site remains a point of historical interest, reflecting the complex and often troubling history of the antebellum South.
