Description: The Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, formerly known as the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, is a significant vehicular tunnel in New York City that connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn beneath the East River. Opened in 1950, it spans approximately 1.7 miles, making it the longest continuous underwater vehicular tunnel in North America. The tunnel was renamed in 2010 in honor of Hugh L. Carey, the 51st Governor of New York, who is credited with rescuing New York City from the brink of financial collapse in the 1970s. Managed by the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority, a division of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the tunnel plays a crucial role in the city's transportation infrastructure, facilitating the movement of thousands of vehicles daily and easing congestion on other major routes.
