Description: The Tom Lantos Tunnels, also known as the Devil's Slide Tunnels, are a pair of road tunnels located on California State Route 1, near Pacifica and Montara in San Mateo County. Named in honor of the late U.S. Congressman Tom Lantos, who was instrumental in securing funding for the project, the tunnels were opened to traffic in March 2013. They were constructed to bypass the notoriously dangerous and landslide-prone stretch of road known as Devil's Slide, which had been a significant hazard for motorists for decades. The tunnels, each approximately 4,149 feet long, provide a safer and more reliable route along the scenic coastal highway, enhancing both transportation efficiency and safety while preserving the natural beauty of the surrounding area.
