Description: The Duluth South Pier Lighthouse is another historic lighthouse located on the south pier of the Duluth Harbor in Duluth, Minnesota. Similar to the Duluth North Pier Lighthouse, it serves as a navigational aid for ships entering and exiting the Duluth-Superior Harbor and Lake Superior. The original lighthouse at this location was constructed in 1901 and was a square tower made of wood. However, this wooden structure was replaced with the current lighthouse in 1933. The present-day Duluth South Pier Lighthouse is a distinctive Art Deco-style structure designed by architects Francis McComber and Ernest Kennedy. It features a white cylindrical tower made of concrete, standing at a height of 37 feet (11 meters). The lighthouse emits a green light every six seconds, which is visible for up to 11 miles across Lake Superior. Like the North Pier Lighthouse, the South Pier Lighthouse was also automated, and its light is powered by electricity. Over the years, the Duluth South Pier Lighthouse has played a vital role in guiding ships through the often challenging waters of Lake Superior and into the Duluth-Superior Harbor.
