Description: The Wisconsin Point Lighthouse, also known as the Superior Entry Lighthouse, is a historic lighthouse located on Wisconsin Point in Superior, Wisconsin. It serves as a navigational aid for ships entering the Duluth-Superior Harbor and crossing the westernmost part of Lake Superior. The original lighthouse at this location was constructed in 1855, making it one of the oldest lighthouses on Lake Superior. It was built to guide ships safely through the Superior Entry, the narrow channel that connects Lake Superior to the Duluth-Superior Harbor. The original lighthouse was a wooden structure that stood at a height of 46 feet (14 meters). Over the years, the lighthouse underwent several modifications and renovations. In 1913, the wooden tower was replaced with a more durable cast iron tower, which stands at a height of 56 feet (17 meters) today. The Wisconsin Point Lighthouse has played a crucial role in guiding ships through the Superior Entry, especially during the heyday of shipping on Lake Superior when the harbor was a bustling hub for transporting iron ore, coal, and other goods. In 1970, the lighthouse was automated, and its light was powered by electricity. The original Fresnel lens used in the lighthouse is now on display at the Superior Public Library.
