Description: Miles Canyon is a popular tourist destination located near Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada. It is situated approximately 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) downstream from downtown Whitehorse and is known for its scenic beauty and historic significance. Miles Canyon is named after Major General Nelson Miles, who served in the U.S. Army during the Klondike Gold Rush era. The canyon was a significant obstacle for prospectors during the gold rush as they navigated the Yukon River on their way to the Klondike region. The canyon's treacherous rapids and steep cliffs made it a challenging and dangerous section of the river. In 1901, the Whitehorse Rapids Dam was constructed downstream from Miles Canyon, flooding the rapids and making them navigable. This dam was later replaced by the Whitehorse Hydroelectric Power Station in 1958. Today, Miles Canyon is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for hiking, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. There are well-maintained hiking trails that provide stunning views of the canyon and the Yukon River. The suspension bridge, known as the Miles Canyon Bridge, offers a unique vantage point to observe the river and the surrounding scenery.
