OP Notes: Proceed westward for approximately 0.1 mile, and you'll come upon a modest clearing situated on the left-hand side of the road. The precise location where the tree-lined boundary of the field converges with the road marks the base of the hill you'll ascend to reach the Pearl Harbor tree. A brief uphill stroll directly westward will lead you to the vicinity of the sweet-gum tree.

Description: Faced with the impending threat of war and the realization that his eldest sons were of an age where they might be drafted into the conflict, Myers sought a means to commemorate the soldiers who had lost their lives in the Pearl Harbor attack. He ventured to the rear of his residence, where he came across a diminutive sweet gum tree sapling, no larger than a branch. Carefully, Myers uprooted the tree from its original location and transplanted it to a prominent spot in front of his house. Around the sapling, he positioned an old automobile rim, declaring, "This will serve as our enduring tribute." Today, you can discover this sweet gum tree within Cades Cove, surrounded by numerous other trees that have flourished in the very place where the family's home once stood. It has since grown to an impressive height of approximately 60 feet, exemplifying its remarkable growth since the time of transplantation. The rim encircling the tree has expanded in conjunction with the tree's growth, its division bearing witness to the passage of time since it was originally placed around the sapling. While this memorial was established many years ago, it continues to stand as a poignant reminder of the tragic events at Pearl Harbor, allowing people to reflect upon the enduring significance of that fateful day.
