Description: The Black Hawk Statue, also known as the "Eternal Indian," is a monumental sculpture located in Lowden State Park near the town of Oregon, Illinois. Created by renowned sculptor Lorado Taft, the statue is dedicated to the Native American leader Black Hawk and serves as a memorial to all Native Americans. The statue depicts Black Hawk, a prominent Sauk leader, standing with his arms folded across his chest, gazing out over the Rock River Valley. Standing at 48 feet (14.6 meters) tall, the statue is carved from concrete and covered with a patina to give it the appearance of bronze. The Black Hawk Statue was commissioned by the Honorable Fredrick Francis Lowden in 1908 and completed in 1911. It was originally intended to be part of a larger monument, but due to financial constraints, only the statue was completed. Despite this, the Black Hawk Statue remains one of the largest concrete monolithic statues in the world. The statue is situated on a bluff overlooking the Rock River, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It has become a beloved landmark and symbol of pride for the people of Illinois, attracting visitors from far and wide who come to admire its impressive size and powerful presence.
