Description: The Old Alton Bridge, also known as the Goatman's Bridge, is a historic bridge located near Denton, Texas. Constructed in 1884, the bridge was originally intended to connect the cities of Denton and Copper Canyon. However, when a new bridge was built nearby in 2001, the Old Alton Bridge was closed to vehicular traffic and became a pedestrian footbridge. The bridge is perhaps best known for its folklore and legends, particularly surrounding the "Goatman" or "Old Alton Bridge Goatman." According to local legend, a Black goat farmer named Oscar Washburn, who was known as the Goatman, lived near the bridge in the early 20th century. Washburn was allegedly lynched by members of the Ku Klux Klan on the bridge, and his spirit is said to haunt the area to this day. The Goatman's Bridge has become a popular destination for paranormal enthusiasts and thrill-seekers interested in exploring its haunted reputation. Many visitors claim to have experienced strange phenomena, including ghostly apparitions, disembodied voices, and unexplained noises, while visiting the bridge at night. In addition to its paranormal associations, the Old Alton Bridge also holds historical significance as a rare example of a Pratt through-truss bridge in Texas. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and remains a picturesque spot for visitors to enjoy scenic views of the surrounding countryside.
