Description: Approximately 12 miles southwest of Dufur, you'll encounter the remnants of Friend, a town with a history deeply tied to its founder, George J. Friend. The town was a vital hub for local farmers, sheepherders, and loggers, marking the terminus of the Great Southern Railroad route that extended north from Dufur to The Dalles. As you explore, you'll come across the still-standing old general store, its windows now vacant, overlooking what was once a bustling thoroughfare. The town's original one-room schoolhouse, constructed in 1909, continues to serve as a vibrant community center, having even hosted events like the Schoolhouse Rock Festival in recent times. Not far, at a distance of about half a mile, lies the Friend Cemetery, partially concealed within a cluster of trees. Amid the gravestones, you'll discover the final resting place of the town's founder, as well as numerous other early settlers who contributed to the region's history.
