Description: The picturesque Pauley Bridge stands as a pedestrian walkway, offering a tranquil vantage point overlooking the Big Sandy River. It has become a favored destination for tourists seeking to capture a photograph or enjoy a leisurely stroll. This wooden bridge, while no longer accessible to vehicles, remains in excellent condition and spans the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River. The construction of the Pauley Bridge commenced in 1936 and reached completion in 1940. Notably, the bridge features stone towers at each end, fashioned from sandstone, making it distinctive as the sole WPA bridge incorporating this material in its construction. The WPA denoted these terminal sections with their emblem, and at the very apex of each end, one can find the inscriptions "W. P. A." and "1936." In 1992, the National Register of Historic Places officially recognized the bridge's historical significance. However, it wasn't until 2000 that the bridge ceased to accommodate vehicular traffic. Spanning approximately 390 feet, the bridge is frequently employed as a backdrop for photography, adding to its enduring appeal.
