Description: Coaldale, a modest settlement situated in Esmeralda County, approximately 30 miles to the west of Tonopah, came into existence during the 1880s, driven by the burgeoning coal mining activity that earned it its distinctive name. In its prime, this now-deserted town flourished with an array of amenities including a marketplace, general store, post office, gas station, railroad depot, hotel, and a compact residential enclave. However, as the 1930s unfolded, Coaldale gradually transformed from a bustling hub to more of a pit stop for travelers along the roadside. In 1993, environmental testing conducted by the EPA unveiled unsettling findings—the underground fuel storage tanks of the service station were seeping fuel, prompting swift action. In response, the town's residents hastily departed, leaving behind their homes and enterprises. The precise narrative behind this exodus remains shrouded in mystery, a tale that lingers as an enigma to this day.
