Description: In 2003, a massive forest fire wreaked havoc on a 250-acre stretch of land along the Rio Grande River. This calamitous event, while devastating and harrowing, could have been even more extensive if not for the courageous efforts of a dedicated team of firefighters. Among these brave individuals was Mark Chavez. During his spare time, Mark Chavez pursued an artistic passion as a chainsaw sculptor. In the aftermath of the destruction, he recognized an opportunity to bring a glimmer of hope to what was otherwise a tragic incident. He chose a specific site near the Paseo del Bosque trail, which had been profoundly affected by the fire's aftermath. Armed with chainsaws, sanders, propane burners, and die grinders, Chavez embarked on a creative endeavor to transform the charred remains of Cottonwood trees into awe-inspiring works of art. Drawing inspiration from the area's natural beauty and the events that transpired, Chavez crafted a variety of sculptures. These included a formidable dragon symbolizing the ferocity of the fire, an eagle rising triumphantly from the flames, a depiction of the ditch witch from Mexican folklore known as La Llorona, as well as representations of coyotes and beavers. Visitors now have the opportunity to witness the breathtaking sculptures created by Mark Chavez in the serene setting of the Pueblo Montaño Picnic Area, located at the trailhead of Paseo del Bosque. The area welcomes visitors with leashed dogs, offering a unique blend of artistry and the great outdoors.
