Description: The Rose Island Lighthouse is located on Rose Island in Narragansett Bay, near Newport, Rhode Island. It was first built in 1870 to aid navigation in the bay and guide ships safely through the area. The original lighthouse was a wooden structure, but it was replaced with the current stone and brick tower in 1912. The Rose Island Lighthouse served as an active aid to navigation until it was decommissioned in 1971. After its decommissioning, the lighthouse fell into disrepair, but it was later restored and transformed into a non-profit historic site and museum. Today, the Rose Island Lighthouse is open to the public and offers a unique opportunity to experience life as a lighthouse keeper. Visitors can stay overnight in the keeper's quarters and learn about the history and maritime heritage of the area. The lighthouse also provides scenic views of Narragansett Bay and the surrounding coastline. It is accessible by boat and tours are available during certain times of the year.
