Description: As plans took shape for the Centennial celebration of Texas Independence, a group of Dallas businessmen led by R. L. Thornton, Sr., Fred Florence, and Nathan Adams promoted Dallas as the host city for the major Centennial event. The Centennial Exposition Corporation, formed in 1935, took temporary control of the State Fair grounds, and over 100 architects, artists, and craftsmen began designing the Exposition complex. The project employed thousands during the Great Depression, resulting in impressive structures, works of art, and landscaping. Officially opened by Gov. James Allred on June 6, 1936, the Exposition featured a spectacular parade through downtown Dallas, guest speakers, and nationwide news coverage. U.S. Secretary of Commerce Daniel Roper declared "America, here is Texas!" in his speech, and President and Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt visited on June 12. Running for 178 days and entertaining over six million people, the Exposition was a turning point for Dallas, leaving a lasting legacy of art, history, architecture, and culture for generations of Texans.
