Description: The Desert View Tower is a historic roadside attraction and lookout tower located in the In-Ko-Pah Mountains of southeastern California, near the town of Jacumba in San Diego County. The tower was constructed in the 1920s by Bert Vaughn, an early pioneer and entrepreneur, as part of his efforts to promote tourism in the area. It was intended to serve as a roadside attraction and a vantage point for travelers. The tower stands at approximately 70 feet (21 meters) in height and offers panoramic views of the surrounding desert landscape. Visitors can climb a spiral staircase to reach the observation deck at the top. Just across the parking lot from the Desert View Tower lies a chaotic collection of boulders, practically begging to be explored. Each twist and turn reveals haphazardly formed faces and animal shapes, offering a whimsical surprise at every corner. It's important to note that this terrain might not be suitable for those who experience claustrophobia. Boulder Park has been a prominent feature of the desert landscape since the early 1930s. During the challenging times of the Great Depression, W.T. Ratcliff, an unemployed engineer, tirelessly carved into the unyielding granite for what's reported to be a mere dollar a day—a considerable feat, especially considering the scorching desert temperatures.
