Description: The Dutch Island Lighthouse is located on Dutch Island, which is part of Jamestown, Rhode Island. It was first established in 1827 to guide maritime traffic through Narragansett Bay and was an essential aid to navigation in the area. The original lighthouse was constructed of rubblestone and stood 42 feet tall. Over the years, the Dutch Island Lighthouse underwent several changes and renovations. In 1857, the tower was replaced with a cast-iron structure, and in 1898, a fog signal building was added. The lighthouse was automated in the 1960s, and the original lens was removed. Today, the Dutch Island Lighthouse is still an active aid to navigation, operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. The surrounding area of Dutch Island is managed as part of the Dutch Island Wildlife Management Area and is open to the public for recreational activities such as hiking and birdwatching. However, access to the lighthouse itself may be restricted due to its active status.
