Description: Doane Rock is a significant glacial erratic located in Eastham, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. It is one of the largest glacial erratic boulders on Cape Cod and holds historical and geological significance. The rock is named after Deacon John Doane, one of the original settlers of Eastham. It has also been called Enochs or Enos rock, named after Deacon Doane's son, as well as Great Rock. Doane Rock is estimated to stand around 18 feet (5.5 meters) high, with a portion extending underground for about 12 feet (3.7 meters). This massive boulder was left behind by glaciers during the last Ice Age, specifically the Laurentide Ice Sheet that covered the region between approximately 18,000 to 12,000 years ago. It serves as a fascinating geological remnant of the glacial activity that shaped the landscape of Cape Cod. To visit Doane Rock, you can find it just off Doane Road, about one mile past the Salt Pond Visitor Center, within the Cape Cod National Seashore. Limited parking is available near the rock. Doane Rock is a popular attraction for visitors to Cape Cod, offering an opportunity to witness and appreciate the geological history of the region. Its imposing size and historical significance make it an interesting stop for those exploring the Cape Cod area and its natural wonders.
