Description: The Ashfork Bainbridge Steel Dam, which stands as the world's pioneering large steel dam and one of merely three of its kind ever constructed within the United States, came into being in 1898 under the auspices of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF). Its primary purpose was to provide a water supply essential for the railway's operations in the vicinity of Ash Fork, Arizona. This remarkable structure derives its name from both the town of Ash Fork and the distinguished civil engineer Francis H. Bainbridge. The latter, an alumnus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and a member of the Rensselaer Society of Engineers, served as an engineer for ATSF. Notably, the dam has held a place on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976.
