Description: The project's inception through the "Artists in Communities: America Creates for the Millennium" initiative by the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation (MAAF) created the perfect match between the Shreveport Regional Arts Council (SRAC) and nationally renowned mural artist Meg Saligman. The grant allowed the dream of creating the largest mural in America to become a reality. Over the course of seven months, Saligman and her team worked diligently to research Shreveport's history, photograph potential subjects, and interview residents from surrounding communities. Their goal was to create a mural that would represent the people of Shreveport in the year 2000 and convey their hopes, dreams, and desires for the future. Today, the completed mural stands as a testament to Shreveport's identity and aspirations. The east side of the mural features everyday Shreveport residents, showcasing the cycle of life and the city's rich cultural diversity. The presence of a Native American woman and other symbolic figures adds a deeper layer of significance to the artwork. The southern wall of the mural depicts a woman holding a fiery orb of hope, symbolizing the region's aspirations for the future. The incorporation of meaningful icons, such as the city's flower (the rose) and references to its history as a port and its passion for food, adds further depth to the storytelling.
