Description: Riverview Hospital, also known as the Riverview Hospital Historic District, is a former mental health facility located in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada. It was one of the largest mental health institutions in British Columbia and played a significant role in the province's mental health care system. The hospital was established in 1913 and served as a treatment center for individuals with mental illnesses, including psychiatric patients and those with developmental disabilities. Over the years, Riverview Hospital expanded to include numerous buildings and facilities on its extensive grounds, providing care and treatment to thousands of patients. However, changes in mental health care practices and policies led to a gradual decline in the hospital's population, and it began to face financial challenges. As a result, the facility was gradually closed down, and the last patients were transferred to other facilities in 2012. After the closure, there have been discussions and debates about the future use of the site. Some of the buildings have been repurposed for other purposes, such as film and television production, and there have been proposals for the development of the site for various purposes, including mixed-use residential and parkland.
