Description: The Maud Lewis Memorial Park is conveniently situated just a brief 3-minute drive west of Digby, accessible via Exit 26 on Highway 101 in Marshalltown. Within this picturesque park, visitors will find a vibrant perennial garden, inviting picnic tables, benches for relaxation, and a trio of informative interpretive panels. These interpretive panels serve to illuminate different aspects of Maud Lewis's life and artistic legacy. The first panel delves into Maud's remarkable journey and her enduring impact on the world of art. The second panel sheds light on the meticulous restoration and preservation efforts dedicated to her original home. Lastly, the third panel provides insights into the steel replica memorial. The steel memorial is a faithful recreation, replicating both the size and shape of the actual home where Maud resided with her husband, Everett, from 1938 to 1970. During this period, Maud offered her charming paintings for sale directly from this modest abode, which she had adorned, both inside and out, with her distinctive folk-inspired motifs. Prices for her artwork ranged from $2 to $3 in the 1940s and 50s but increased as her renown soared in the 60s and 70s. Following the passing of her husband in 1979, concerned residents rallied to form the Maud Lewis Painted House Society, dedicated to preserving her home. Eventually, the house was acquired by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS) in 1984. The AGNS carefully disassembled the house and painstakingly relocated it to their gallery in Halifax, where it has found a permanent home and remains on display for all to appreciate.
