Description: These concrete pillars have stood here since the 1960s, each bearing numbered markings that could potentially correspond to specific dates. The mystery surrounding them has sparked various speculations – from an abandoned project to even wilder theories involving extraterrestrial homage. What is certain is that Inland Cement, a company that owned the land in the 1950s and 1960s, is associated with this site. Here, four perfectly symmetrical, small, round hills dot the landscape, and the pillars are meticulously arranged. In the photograph below, you can see the second cluster of pillars, situated farthest from the road. In reality, this site is the remnant of a business competition. The cement pillars were likely laid in the late 1963 or early 1964 period by the British-American Construction and Materials Limited, a conglomerate formed from the merger of 31 smaller firms. Their expertise encompassed building materials, land acquisition and development, as well as construction – including the creation of these cement pillars. In 1963, this company and another entity, Inland, independently opted to acquire cement plants. However, Winnipeg already housed a cement plant at the time. Analysts cautioned them that the demand in Manitoba might not warrant the operation of three factories simultaneously. Despite the advice, they proceeded with trials using their newly produced cement. The dates inscribed on the pillars indicate when they were manufactured, likely to gauge the curing time required before utilizing the cement in construction. By 1964, British American Cement Limited was absorbed by its competitor. They abandoned this site to establish another, which too now stands deserted. And so, the tale draws to a close!
