Description: In the summer and autumn of 1981, Valdez's Prince William Sound College had the privilege of hosting the Hungarian-born sculptor Peter Toth, who had made a solemn commitment at that time to craft a sculpture in each of the fifty states. In Valdez, the monument he fashioned marked his fortieth homage to the Native American heritage of the United States. During the early 1980s, Toth made appearances on several prominent television networks, during which he made it clear that he wouldn't accept any payment for any of the monuments. He regarded these sculptures as a gift to the American people. The wood for some of his smaller carvings in Valdez was sourced from Cordova, while the larger piece used for the Whispering Giant sculpture came from the Sitka region.
