Description: The petite chapel occupies a special location at the very heart of the contiguous 48 states of the United States. Since its inception in 1967, it has magnetized thousands of visitors and dispensed hundreds of Bibles and pamphlets, instilling and nurturing faith among those who seek solace within its walls. The initiative to build this chapel was spearheaded by Lawrence Tanis, a devoted member of Dispatch CRC, nestled in the rural landscapes of Dispatch, Kansas. His inspiration was kindled during a trip to Washington state in 1966 when he encountered several "wayside chapels" erected by CRC congregations. These sacred spaces were designed to offer travelers a pause for reflection and prayer. Though Lawrence Tanis departed from this world in 2015, his legacy lives on. We had the privilege of connecting with his daughter, Lois Veenstra, who graciously shared some of the chapel's history. Mr. Tanis skillfully fashioned a sturdy frame, complete with wheels, a platform, and a tow hitch. Upon this mobile foundation, he meticulously crafted the chapel itself, measuring a modest six feet by eight feet. Throughout this endeavor, he received invaluable assistance from members of Dispatch CRC and the Rose Valley United Methodist Church.
