Description: On April 20, 2002, the Kaw Nation commemorated the Allegawaho Heritage Memorial Park, encompassing 168 acres of their ancestral lands. This site includes the Monument and one of the three Kaw villages that were inhabited during the period from the 1840s to 1872. Within the park, remnants of stone structures are visible, representing three out of the 138 huts that were constructed by the United States government as housing for the Kanza people in 1862. Interestingly, the Kanza chose not to utilize these structures as residences but rather repurposed them as stables for their horses. Subsequently, after the Kanza were compelled to relocate to Oklahoma in 1872, early settlers took up residence in these buildings until they constructed their own homes. Later on, these huts were adapted for use as agricultural outbuildings on their farms.
