OP Notes: Open from Memorial Day to October 15
Description: The Top of the World Store is perched at an elevation of 9,400 feet along the picturesque 69-mile Beartooth Highway (US 212), recognized as an All-American Road. It's located 38 miles from Red Lodge, Montana, and just 25 miles from Cooke City, Montana, which is a mere 6 miles away from the Northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park. This particular section of the highway is accessible to travelers from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. It has earned the esteemed title of "America's most beautiful roadway," a designation attributed by Charles Kuralt of CBS News. The store itself has an interesting history, initially established on the shores of Beartooth Lake and later relocated to its current site in the early 1960s. Situated within the stunning Shoshone National Forest, the area offers abundant opportunities for camping, hiking, 4-wheeling, and fishing during the summer months. As the highway closes in October, the recreational scene transforms into one of ice fishing, snowmobiling (extending into some years until May), cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowboarding.
