Description: Cape Mendocino Lighthouse is situated on Cape Mendocino, which is the westernmost point on the California mainland. It was first built in 1868 to help guide ships safely along this rugged and treacherous stretch of coastline. The original lighthouse was a traditional tower made of wood. However, due to the challenging weather conditions and the instability of the land, the lighthouse was relocated a short distance inland in 1998 to protect it from coastal erosion. The original lighthouse structure still stands, and the relocated tower continues to serve as a navigational aid for maritime traffic in the area.
