Description: Overlook Park, spanning just over one acre, is more of a wide pull-out than a traditional park, offering expansive views of Shelton, the lumber mill, and the Olympic Mountains. A notable feature of the park is the historic marker known as the Big Wheel, one of the largest ever built. This 11-foot wheel operated bandsaws on the Shelton waterfront from 1926 until 1967, originally serving to saw spruce for World War I aircraft. Over its 41-year tenure under McCleary and Simpson ownership, the bandmill sawed an astounding three billion board feet of lumber, equivalent to housing over one million people. The Big Wheel was dedicated to Shelton mill workers by the Simpson Timber Company on its 80th anniversary in May 1970. Additionally, visitors are greeted by the welcome sign to Shelton at the edge of the park, marking the entrance to the city.
