OP Notes: Appomattox Court House National park is free to visit! It’s a good leg stretcher after a bike ride and has an air conditioned visitor center for the hot days with a theater. Different events are held here with reenactments and storytelling characters. Beautiful ride through the park as well.
Description: Appomattox Court House National Historical Park in Virginia is a preserved site of immense historical significance, marking the location where Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, effectively ending the American Civil War. The park encompasses the reconstructed village of Appomattox Court House, including the McLean House where the surrender took place, and offers a glimpse into 19th-century life with period buildings, artifacts, and exhibits that recount the events leading up to the surrender and its aftermath. Visitors can explore the historic grounds, take guided tours, and learn about the soldiers' experiences, the terms of surrender, and the broader implications for the nation’s path towards reconstruction and reconciliation. The park serves as both a memorial to the end of the Civil War and a place of reflection on the challenges of reunification and healing in the aftermath of conflict.
